SANDFORD SCOUT GROUP’S GOING GREEN

Date: 19th Sep 2019 Author: County Office

From Today Sandford Scout Group will be producing their own renewable energy to power their operations from Sandford Scout Hut. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of their scouts today a solar energy system, including battery storage has been installed into their base of operations, completing phase one of their “Heat The Hut 2019” fundraising campaign.

Assistant Scout Leader – Duncan Shayler says “We’re really proud of our scouts, when we suggested fundraising to get heating installed into the hut our Scouts were insistent that any system installed shouldn’t have a negative effect on the environment. They independently went away and investigated multiple renewable energy, heating and insulation options. With phase one now complete we’ll be generating all of the energy we need to keep the hut warm this winter and for many winters still to come”

This comes following the scouts baking cakes, organising several community race nights, climbing the Dorset Three Peaks, completing the Lego Walk of Pain and thanks to several generous external donations and support from Wareham St Martin Solar Fund, The Sandford Pub, Shaylers Vision Centre, Wareham Rotary Club and Wareham Beerex.

Duncan says “The scouts have worked tirelessly fundraising towards this campaign, we’re really grateful to everyone that’s kindly donated towards the fund, it’s a massive achievement to see phase one installed and live. There’s a long way to go and our fundraising campaign continues as we strive towards Phases two and three of the project to ensure that this winter the hut is actually warm for the Scouts to enjoy”

Even the supplier, Light Group (Holdings) Ltd. in association with the Energy Advice Team, have put in towards this project by donating their labour free of charge and providing the parts at cost price.

Andy Duffin – Managing Director of Light Group (Holdings) says “When originally approached by Lisa of The Energy Advice Team I suggested a couple of initial options. As the project developed we tweaked the design to ensure Sandford Scouts Group got the best system available for their quite unique needs, and in this case, we were more than happy to install at cost price. We always strive to provide a bespoke package to best suit our individual customer’s requirements.”

Reportedly further community fundraising events have already been planned by the Scouts in association with Asda and The Sandford Pub towards installing insulation and an energy efficient heating system. The Cub Scouts are also getting involved having organised a sponsored “24 hour Stay awake”. Even the parents are getting in on the action with Andy, Father of two Sandford Cub Scouts, agreeing to run an Ultra Marathon towards the campaign.
